Introduction To History

What Is History

The word history was derived from the Greek word historia – which means inquiry.
History is an important branch of knowledge which is defined as the study of man and society It has been defined in various ways by different scholars and philosophers. The definition could be observed from two dimensions: namely, history as a process and history as a study or discipline.

History At The First Level

History, at the first level, is a process defined by Karl Marx as the relationship between man and his environment and the influence of his environment on man. History at this level refers to the event, episodes and the totality of the changes and experiences which humanity has undergone ever since the emergence of human society. The subject matter of history as a process is man, not as biological unit but man in society, that is, a social man who is susceptible to change. This social man is a phenomenon in process through time. The changing activities of man over time constitute the transformation of societies.

History At The Second Level

At the second level, history as an academic discipline is the reconstruction, study and explanation of these changes which humanity has undergone. Carr, in 1960 defined history at this level as “a continuous process of interaction between the historian and his facts, an unending dialogue between the present and the past”. History is an organised critical study of such past activities of human beings that had produced important effects on subsequent course of events. It is the study of past human activities at a particular place over a given period of time so as to record changes over time. It is also systematic study of the process events or motion of events through the aid of records or sources.

Conclusion: history refers to both the events of the past as well as the study of these events. The central issue in both is change. There would be no history if there was no change. But to study change, is to study continuity.
Change can be gradual, rapid and radical or revolutionary. History is centered on man in society in the past but one that has meaning and value to man in society today. Enrol For The Big History By Big Bang – The course talk about the history of life, earth, society and many more.
