I believe you have understand what a present tense in a sentence is now, so you should be able to identify a present tense in a sentence, but if you don’t understand, kindly let me know and I will take the session again. In the mean time you might also want to read The Rules Of Concord
Today we will be examine past tense,
What is a past tense?
Past tense : are tenses used to express an action that happened at a particular time in the past.
1) Mary went to the market.
In the above sentence the past tense there is went, it is wrong to say mary go/goes to market, except if you are saying it in terms of Present tense,
E.g Mary goes to market everyday, you can see that this one is different from the first example. top↑

Other examples are ;
2) I was here yesterday when it happened.
3) I had left before he arrived.
Other words associated with past tense are, were, had, was, went and used to, etc.
Types Of Past Tense
a] Simple past tense : simple past tense is used to express an action that took place or happened in the past at a particular time.
1) We were all present at the occasion.
2) I was there when she gave birth.
b] past continuous tense : it is used to express an action that happened in the past at some specific time or an action that continuously happened in the past and ended in the past.
1) I used to goes to my mother’s shop before I gain admission.
You can see that in the above example, he/she used to to goes to his/her mother’s shop but when he/she gain admission, he/she stops going to his/her mother’s shop,
You can see that those two activities happened in the past,
and before you can express what is above, that means he/she is already in higher institution,
You can also see that if he/she hadn’t gain admission, he/she will still be going to his/her mother’s shop, that implies that what stop the action of he/she going to her mother’s shop in the past was he/she gaining admission. top↑
NOTE : Past continuous tenses are not usually used only by itself, in most cases it used with other types of past tense.
c] Past perfect tense : is used to express an action that happened in the past and ended or completed in the past.
1) I used to goes to school everyday before i graduated.
In the sentence above, you can see that, he/she used to goes to school everyday until he/she graduated,
That means the action started when he/she got admission into the school and ended or was completed when he/she graduated. All happened in the past.
d] Past perfect continuous tense : it is used to express an action that happened or took place for a long time in the past and ended or completed in the past.
1) I used to go to school everyday day for a complete four years before I graduated.
In the sentence above he/she used to goes to school everyday, that is, continuously, before he/she graduated
That is, everyday stand for continuous while before stand for past. So together past perfect continuous tense. top↑
